Celebrating Women in India’s Marine Sector

Stories of resilience and leadership from MPEDA-supported exporters and farmers

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) proudly features the stories of exceptional women entrepreneurs, exporters, and farmers who are making significant contributions to India’s seafood industry.

Their journeys reflect not only personal determination but also the growing role of women in strengthening and sustaining India’s marine exports. From aquaculture farms to export units, these women have overcome challenges, adapted to change, and created livelihoods for others along the way.

Jolliamma Alex – A Steadfast Shrimp Farmer from Kerala

She started her journey in 1992 with Penaeus monodon farming and later switched to Vannamei shrimp with MPEDA’s technical support.

Managing a 1-hectare pond, she has learned to deal with seasonal changes, water quality fluctuations, and fluctuating market prices. Despite the challenges, she continues to achieve good yields. Her successful transition from traditional practices to more advanced shrimp farming is an example of how training, exposure, and dedication can reshape careers in aquaculture.
